If we acquired consciousness through evolution then consciousness cannot be an emergent property of a system (ours or AI's) because the system would operate the same causally regardless of whether or not it achieved consciousness (no survival advantage would be achieved by becoming conscious). I submit consciousness offers an evolutionary advantage through e.g. the piquancy of pain, thus AIs ain't, and an explanation of consciousness must be sought elsewhere...
