LLMs are not Goddamn autocomplete. JFC people keep regurgitating this talking point. did you ever once consider where that talking point comes from, who decided to start circulating it and what their own incentives might have been? and they don't 'make anything new' only in the sense that technically nothing is new ever. just rearrangements of different things. 'Hades wasn't a new and groundbreaking game because all of the things it did were done by other games at some point, hurr durr' jerk me off we don't know how they work, which is disconcerting in its own right, but it is not autocomplete and hasn't been like that in a long time. it is a combination of scaled compute, training data and reinforcement learning, and while it behaves in a predictable way we don't understand why it behaves the way it does here is a non-techbro expert talking about other non-techbro experts on what the reality of AI systems right now is, as far as academia is concerned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PctlBxRh0p4&t=4093s nobody from those discussion are going to make a gajillion dollars on the back of LLMs succeeding. it's just academics who understand the power of a new suite of tools
