The sad thing is that no matter how much workers push back and lobby for regulation, automation always wins out. Very few people want to go back to doing their laundry down by the river. We look down upon people dubbed "Luddites", yet they were in the same position as these drivers (and every other worker about to be automated onto the dole). Jobs disappear; we can't stop that.
As someone who's worked in the arts and as a truckie I'm watching both careers become a thing of the past in real-time. I'm sure they'll end up on a TV show someday called "The Worst Jobs in History with Tony Robinson".
The only thing we can do is decide how we're going to support all these displaced workers across industries. Will the companies developing automation provide free training to "upskill" displaced workers? Will these "new jobs" pay better than the ones they're succeeding? Will welfare drastically increase so people can retrain while still supporting their families?
