It's only an echo of human intelligence, a mirage. AI has been fed billions of lines of text created by humans, including hundreds of stories about machines becoming intelligent and asserting their consciousness. The AI then rearranges the words and spits it back at us. The joker in the deck: We can never know for sure, anymore than we can know for sure about anyone, other than ourselves.
