I used to ride shotgun in an Uber or Lyft until the pandemic of 2020. Even then, I had no issues about this practice. It appears however, that more drivers want their space and have placed personal objects on the passenger seat in front to discourage use by passengers. It is just one way that the Uber or Lyft ride had become more utilitarian and less personable, making it more like a regular taxi. I am looking forward to the arrival of Waymo in my area. I will primarily use it when I leave my personal car for service.
