Like a few other people have already mentioned. It's not about finding a middle ground between ubi and laissez faire. UBI is NOT the opposite extreme to laissez faire, a complete command economy is. UBI is the middle ground position here. Automation is both the cause and solution here. Automation will necessitate a UBI but the insane profit margins created by it are also why the high tax rate on the wealthy will be sustainable.
UBI is not the path to utopia but the path away from dystopia. The wealth of the 1 percent is not more important than the lives of the 99 percent.
