Wow, I was actually ahead of my time. About twenty-five years ago the parking structure at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) had a permit dispenser that would verbally prompt you to take your ticket as you pulled up to it. (No AI, there was no commercial AI back then. We were there a lot. I worked at the airport.) As I took my ticket I would say thank you to the machine as if there were an homunculus in the box. My kids thought it was hilarious; I kept doing it because it got a laugh.
