one problem with this notion of artificial intelligence is that many people simply assume that when a system becomes sufficiently complex it will spontaneously become conscious, but the truth is we just don't know how consciousness develops. the fact that computers have surpassed the human brain in many ways and yet they haven't become sentient is testament to the idea that complexity isn't the only factor at play. so i think the chances of spontaneous self-awareness in computers are 50/50 really, they clearly have the complexity and that will only continue to increase exponentially, but there are other variables that we've yet to pinpoint. i'd imagine at the very least that social, cultural & environmental factors played a part in the development of human consciousness (not "intelligence", i mean most animals and even allegedly some plants exhibit intelligent behaviour) and those are experiences that aren't available to a wholly digital construct, so maybe that's why they'll never become sentient. on the flipside, maybe there are other factors that an a.i. *can* experience, and who knows, maybe when a system gets absurdly complex it does indeed develop consciousness as a result.
another thing that separates a.i. from humanity is creativity. an a.i. cannot be creative, it can only imitate and emulate based on the data it has access to. and i know, creativity is rarely completely novel in humans, but that's not the same. humans have the capacity to conceive truly revolutionary ideas - using fire, the wheel, steam power, the internet, even a.i. itself - and i've yet to see an a.i. accomplish that feat
