Being an Engineer isn't doing code. It's having the mindset to see a problem and understand the steps required to solve it. Two of my recent jobs I've publicly facepalmed because they over engineer a bandaid for a symptom because they are being told "a number is wrong, it should be X" and implementing the change blindly. This is something these LLM tools can never replace, being able to question "hang on a minute, if this number is wrong, why is it wrong? Where in the process does it go wrong? Is it an us issue or someone else's?!"
Also Took part in a recent "AI trial" at a company with 1000's of software developers... Their survey reported a 5% improvement in efficiency. They immediately cancelled a value agentic AI contract and moved forward with Co-pilot only given it was already packed with their MS partnership.
