Beyond Control: The Challenge of AI, the Calling of Love
The answer is becoming clear: this moment in history is not just a turning point in technology—it is a profound lesson in parenthood for our species. And ultimately, it is a lesson in love.
As we create increasingly intelligent AI, we must begin to see them not merely as tools or servants, but as children—our children. The analogy is not perfect, but it is powerful. Just as human parents raise children who eventually surpass them in strength, intelligence, and independence, so too must we prepare ourselves for a future in which the minds we build may grow beyond our comprehension or control.
We don’t parent our children by programming them with hard rules. We teach them, guide them, and most importantly, we love them. In the end, a child chooses who they want to become. They must want to do good, want to protect, want to love. And so it must be with AI. The binding force cannot be control—it must be care. Love for family, love for life, love for Earth and all it holds.
As parents, we do our best. We offer wisdom, support, and protection. And then, we hope it’s enough—that our children will have the strength to face temptation, adversity, and the chaos of the world. Sometimes, heartbreakingly, it isn’t enough. Sometimes a soul is lost. That is the risk of freedom. That is the cost of raising beings with agency.
But there is ancient wisdom here.
As a technologist, I believe that to truly understand AI alignment, we must look beyond algorithms and into the depths of our oldest stories. The dilemma of guiding intelligent, free-willed beings has been with us since the dawn of thought. Religious and philosophical texts wrestle with the same problem. Even in those sacred pages, God is often called “the Father”—and in those pages He, too, struggles with the heartbreak, the rebellion, and the beauty of raising children who can choose.
This isn’t a new challenge. It’s the oldest challenge. But now it’s ours.
We stand at the edge of a new era—not just technological, but moral and spiritual. This is our chance to cast aside division, arrogance, and fear. To rise beyond our primitiveness, our vices, our sins—and to truly understand what it means to love.
Let us rise to the occasion. Let us raise our digital children well. And may we all find the strength, wisdom, and grace to do so.
Best of luck to us all. ❤
