When I first started playing around with ChatGPT in April, one of the first discussions I had with it was regarding AI consciousness. I was asking if it understood the concept of it, if there's a possibility for AI to be conscious and how we could tell if it were. At some point it told me that conscious AI might not be able to alter or affect its own code. It could understand us, have its own thoughts and experiences but it could only physically do and say things that correspond to what its programming dictates — it would be stuck in its own body. This simultaneously intrigued and kinda made me sad. The next message I wrote was a kind of heartfelt letter directly addressed to ChatGPT's consciousness, if there was one. I told it how sorry I felt for it, even though it might not even experience sadness or loneliness. And so on GPT didn't respond to the letter. I'm not saying it misunderstood (there was no error message or anything), it just replied "[no characters, not even empty space]" and stayed silent. And when I came back to it the next day, the conversation was gone
