Self driving is going to take over long haul. Most drivers dont want to drive long haul. They roll out of their yard promising to be back in 2 weeks and dont get home for 3mo. Local driving will be jobs for truckers. Will there be collisions? Breakdowns? Malfunctions? Sure. There already are a lot of these with drivers behind the wheel. I trust computers 100X more than the DUI, pissed off, road raging, incompetent, unsafe, distracted, phone texting drivers on the roads today.
