I don't really use AI for reference as much as I might generate something like "Vulture Cowboy" to get some inspiration at things to google to then find an actual reference. Though when I need to have something to actually reference when I model in AI, I completely agree AI slop rarely make enough sense to be worth it. Make a whole model in blender for 3d printing is a bit time consuming, so AI is just a decent enough really early stage for some of the total inspiration I might need, sometimes. Usually though I have a solid idea of what I want to model since I just do it as a hobby.
