I think the biggest problem is not that of AI directed influence, but the embedding of AI inside bureaucracy and government agencies. We as individuals would completely lose control and not be able to do a thing about it. For comparison, think of the End The Fed movement and how little traction that has achieved. Also, witness the move towards CBDCs. They become ubiquitous and unstoppable, even if, theoretically, the switches could be turned off.
