This technology isn't like cars. I'd say it's comparable to cloning technology. We'd be much further along with cloning and there would be amazing advances that we haven't made today, if we just embraced it. Medical breakthroughs we probably can''t imagine. And yet....the dangers would dwarf the good so we have strict conditions on that technology. (Even the Chinese heavily restrict cloning, which should tell you that China's not going to destroy their society just so they can beat us at ai, which is a common retort to any regulations around this new technology.)
This idea that we can't stop ai and embrace it makes no sense. All technology is man made. It's not something that comes from aliens that we have to accept. We get the choice to decide how technology is used for society, good or bad. Blindly following "progress" is avoiding that responsibility.
