Its quite surprising we haven't seen infrastructure built for autonomous driving yet. If there were dedicated autonomous driving highways between nodes or points that did not interfere with regular drivers it would probably not feel so alien. It would be like having a train track next to the highway, except just trucks. As far as the jobs, people don't care. The warning was written over 20 years ago and everyone ignored it.
