The same prediction that AI would replace software developers and engineers was made in the mid 1980s through to the 90s. At that time, coders had to produce simple state models and tasks which the AI could understand. Simplifying complex architectures into small sets of instructions took more time for the developers than just writing the code themselves. Moreover, the final product was impossible to debug. A small change in instructions to the AI to fix a bug produced new code which looked nothing like the original code which had the bug in the first place. Company executives who did not understand the technology created development schedules based on the AI companies' hype without consulting their employees and promised customers new features all the time. They made their companies look ridiculous and blamed the engineers. I see fewer and fewer CEOs who understand the technology. Tim Cook is an expert in managing supply chains and investor expectations. The best CEOs have a vision about where new technology can take us while developers may be too deep in code to see the future as clearly.
