The entire industry is basically an investment scam imho.
After decades of research and hundreds of billions invested, not much has come out of it.
The most impressive parts are some ride hailing services that operate in extremely controlled environments: good weather, low traffic volume, low speeds and specifically mapped out data.
It doesn't scale and it isn't profitable.
Autonomous cars as a concept is the most high tech version of inside the box thinking imaginable. "Are you spending a lot of time in traffic?" "Do you dread looking for parking?" "Are you afraid someone will run you over?" You can have bike paths, walkable car free neighborhoods, public transit or you can have a robot drive you places.
