I think human exceptionalism isn't quite as universal as you portray it here. Many cultures, particularly ones that often get called more "primitive", had no trouble imagining that there were non-human intelligent beings, that certain animals had their own secret languages and societies, and that there were hidden conscious beings inhabiting inanimate objects or features of the environment. The common view is that this is just foolish human beings projecting themselves onto their surroundings, but thinking that animals might be like people necessarily implies that humans are like animals. Stories of werewolves, skin-changers, gods and spirits and shamans, implied a blurred boundary between humanity and the world it lives in, which actually fits better in many ways to our current understanding of psychology and human development than the idea that humans are unique and special. Those cultures were in some ways better prepared, mentally, for ideas like Artificial Intelligence or intelligent aliens, and cultures like that were (and some still are) all over the world. It may be a more naturally occurring idea than the alternative, if you don't just look at "civilized" cultures.
