One plausible answer to this conundrum in the medium term is that we'll have to increase the number of government provided jobs in areas such as healthcare, probably alongside expanded public ownership of important utilities and capacities. After all, most of us have experience of the shortages and bottlenecks in parts of the public sector. As the market shifts to AI, a force beyond the market has to step in. Which we could arguably just call 'Socialism'.
But of course that means a significant increase in the amount of GDP we need to take in taxes. In a "democratic" system where the wealthiest have more influence over the government and are capable of paralysing change, a transformation like that will get totally trapped in the game of politics forever whilst the number of people reduced to begging grows and grows. Look already at the astonishing numbers who use food banks or are technically homelessness, and that's prior to seeing the effects of advanced AI. We already have economic problems which we totally refuse to confront because it can't be addressed within the logic of 'market efficiency'.
