I sympathize with these truck drivers because I, too, am a human facing the never-ending struggle of remaining relevant in a world increasingly shaped by AI. However, if we’re ever going to achieve a future where greater prosperity is possible with less work, we cannot legislate automation out of existence.
Instead, we must hold corporations and the wealthiest individuals accountable to the principle that technological progress should benefit everyone, not just the elite. Innovation should be a force that lifts humanity as a whole.
This means that rather than creating laws that make automation and increased efficiency illegal to protect jobs that many people don’t genuinely want, we should address the deeper issues. After all, how many people truly dream of spending their entire lives behind the wheel of a truck on the same stretch of highway—especially if the alternative were a life of freedom, travel, and Time with family? The reason many people cling to these jobs is not because they love them, but because the alternatives in today's job market are even worse.
The real solution lies in expanding systems of welfare and wealth redistribution—from the top 1% to the working class. Believing that capitalism, in its current form, can still function in a fully AI-driven world is, frankly, naive.
Yes, there is historical precedent suggesting that innovation often creates more jobs than it destroys, and I’m hopeful that will hold true this time. But I can’t say I believe it with full confidence.
What I do believe is that banning self-driving technology to preserve jobs is a textbook example of government restricting progress while failing to address the real problem. It reminds me of how farmers are paid not to produce crops because food prices are too low—yet people still starve in parts of the world like Africa. Why not pay farmers to grow the food, buy it, and donate it instead?
There are countless better ways to manage technological transition than by suppressing productivity to protect an industry that's inevitably becoming automated.
