Ezra's selective tech sympathies kill me. Waymo is a solution to nothing other than managing an externality which is human drivers. The safety question is a distraction that obfuscates labor and monopoly issues. The amount of money that has been spent to do this is grotesque. The idea that driverless cars is this inescapable reality only further entrenches us in car dependency. Agree with Bores that investing in public transit is the solution. Bores anecdote about his Waymo also outsourcing customer support highlights the extractive nature of the industry. Another extractive element is the fact that Waymo depends on road infrastructure that is paid for by all citizens, not just the ones that are privileged enough to ride in them. I also guarantee, at the end of the day, Waymo doesn't even care about transportation. If they see an opportunity to capitalize from some ability that they've acquired through this venture that doesn't include cars or people they would gladly "pivot".
