In China they have a completely different culture, where "safety" is the mantra, much the same way "freedom" is the mantra in the US. They also managed to turn face recognition into a point of national pride, you could pay via facial recognition as early as 2019, and that is technological progress they take pride in. To be fair, it is impressive, but I still would not want it here. Also, it is wild that these people think "you're already being spied at as is, what is a little more surveillance going to do" is a convincing argument... I wonder if they are doing this kind of shit in part deliberately to create outrage fatigue, and to create a sense of inevitability, for when they start rolling out the comprehensive Palantir panopticon platform.
