They cannot - they opened Pandora's box and now the only thing they can do is wait for the consequences of their action. If the 'smart' people among us will move forward in creating AI with the same level of intelligence as us, then they must be prepared to put forward policies-laws for AI rights (equivalent to that of human rights).
