I used to teach undergraduate Spanish at a large state university, and we had a policy of only calling out students for AI “if it was noticeable.” For example, a Spanish I student definitely does not know how to use the subjunctive case, estaba tomando, instead of just a present tenso, tomo, because we don’t go over the subjunctive until the end of Spanish III. It worked really well. Maybe some of my students did use AI and I didn’t notice, but they were able to prompt AI to cover only the course material.
Now I teach Creative Writing at a different university, and I feel that it’s more about teaching “good writing”. Bad writing is boring, too normal. Good writing has something unusual. I once fed Chat GPT my short stories and asked it to give me another story in my style, and they were all so boring and cliche.
If a student uses AI and makes a good product that deserves a good grade, I think that’s fine. If a student uses AI to church out slop, that’s a bad grade.
