In theory, safe AI trucks should be a net positive for society. Less labor required for equal if not more value delivered.
In practice, I'm worried about companies cutting corners on safety and worsening inequality. Truckers would lose their jobs, which will harm them greatly unless they are compensated or provided new job opportunities to cover for it. Also, the value generated by the new technology is likely to be distributed to the companies using it rather than their workers or society in general. The potential for catastrophic traffic accidents also worsens things, especially when legislation around liability for automated vehicles is still unclear.
Over time, the technology is likely to mature, leading to safer implementations and an "evening out" of the economic fallout. Either way, we need to be careful and measured when implementing this technology and we need to regulate the transitional and stable periods appropriately.
