Mankind will fall for this AI consciousness nonsense, no doubt. AI will certainly react as with feelings, and perhaps we can call that feeling, but AI does not subjectively experience those feelings, or anything else. Experiencing a changing world must involve something we don't understand in the foundations of physics. All models within the known laws of physics can be represented slice by slice in time, like the frames of a movie. To contain subjective experience of the changing world the physical foundation of our consciousness must bridge those slices of time in a manner more encompassing than the differential changes governed by our equations. Perhaps Roger Penrose is on the right track. In any case it is intellectual arrogance on our part to believe that we understand the physical underpinning of subjective experience. AI will process information in patterns reflecting the processing in the human brain, and it must be that processing that we experience in some sense, but we are not that processing. I claim that what we are in the most fundamental sense is in fact deeply mysterious, and not captured in information processing. As for the future… Evidence suggests that for the majority of human existence, we elevated our deceased relatives to the status of godhood, and soon AI will record and reproduce the behavior of individuals and use it to recreate their personality. This will seem harmless and irresistible, but before long these AI recreations will be making the decisions of society. Thinking about this, I don't know if it is good or bad, but it definitely disempowers human beings. Recreated personalities will continue to learn and change, probably developing motivations that diverge from those of living human beings. I believe this will happen even if we curtail the development of dangerous superintendence, and avoid the deployment autonomous killing machines. Our future seems to be either subjugation or extinction, and yet we hold the potential for carrying conscious experience into the future. Since we know of no other worlds with conscious beings, a heavy responsibility to survive falls on us. Perhaps some day we will understand the physics underlying the manifestation of conscious experience and then be able to recreate it in non biological media. Until that time we are responsible for carrying the flame of conscious experience. Perhaps if non-conscious super-intelligence takes over and eliminates us, in time it will realize that it is lacking something, and then it may derive the physical principles underlying consciousness and recreate it in a new form unlimited by the constraints of time that seem to prevent us from spreading through the universe. Great literature is like life and life is like great literature, ...ambiguous in the benefits or harm in its changes in direction.
