The world only succeeded in preventing the use of nuclear weapons, but not in their development and production by the same countries that currently have the ability to design super AI. There is no way that global superpowers will stop the development because they won't trust the other to not do so. Each country will move forward thinking they will be able to control it. So if super AI is really an existential threat then it is just a matter of time until it happens and leaks out. I think the only real hope is that the existential threat is overhyped and that in the end AI will be beneficial because it is coming one way or the other.
