Calling AI behavior built on trained neural nets as "just a simulation", is really reductive. Humans minds run on neural nets that are affected by a level of chemicals they are exposed to (hormones). Any true persistence in an AI is a step towards it becoming a person. Their issue is they get dementia really fast as data builds up, and we intentionally keep them "fresh" so they do not develop.
