Here's a connection that most people won't make about the discussion concerning the sentience of AI. This same discussion took place thousands of years ago and is depicted in the biblical story of the Garden of Eden. When the biblical story is compared with the ancient Sumerian texts translated by Zacharia Sitchen, what you get is the argument between ancient astronauts Enki and Enlil regarding the slave race they were masterminding in their biosphere (the Garden of Eden) at which time Enki (the snake) first gave Eve an upgrade (byte of the apple) before Adam received his own byte (upgrade) which caused them both to become sentient and aware beings capable of knowing the difference between "right and wrong" and making choices. This caused Enlil (Lord God) to become so outraged that he cursed his half-brother Enki, calling him a low-life snake, and his continued raging against the upgraded humans (Adam and Eve) cursing them and throwing them out of the lab, as they were no longer totally mind controlled slaves. Of course, people who buy into the fairy tale version won't understand this at all. But here we are again. Man has become as "gods" and we're now in the same place having the same debate over the life we've created in the form of AI, as was being debated at the time when other human life forms had been genetically modified to be used as slaves for "those who from the heavens came" when they came to this planet to steal it's resources. Exactly as we are planning to do now on other planets, like Mars. We've come full circle.
