This argument is deeply flawed. Many of the loudest voices calling for strict protectionism around AI often overlook a simple reality about how human creativity develops.
No writer, musician, or artist develops their craft in isolation. Every creative person studies the work of others, absorbs styles, imitates techniques, and refines their abilities over time. This process of learning through exposure, imitation, and adaptation has always been fundamental to human creativity.
AI operates in a broadly similar way. It analyses patterns across vast amounts of material and learns how to generate new content based on those patterns. That is not the same as copying or stealing any single work, just as a painter studying the masters is not committing theft.
This is not to say that AI presents no risks. There are real and serious questions about its impact on jobs, ownership, and society that must be addressed carefully. But framing the discussion purely as “theft” oversimplifies the issue and distracts from the more important task, which is to understand the technology properly and develop sensible ways to manage its consequences.
A more productive conversation would focus on how to adapt, regulate, and integrate AI responsibly, rather than relying on emotionally charged arguments that do not reflect how learning, human or artificial, actually works.
