I have driven Teslas with FSD since 2019. My driving today is safer with FSD than without. Every time I activate FSD I am warned to keep my hands on the wheel, be attentive and ready to take control. People who disregard basic safety are solely to blame for accidents.
I tell people all the time that the car drives itself. I also say that I would not sleep or get into the back seat. And the FSD will warn me if I take my eyes off the road for more than about 4 seconds and turn itself off with loud, bright warnings if I ignore the gentler warning.
Robotaxis in Austin, TX are different. They have safety monitors, for now, in the front passenger seat. There have been no injury accidents, but if that were to occur, Tesla would be completely liable. I would be more than happy to ride in a Robotaxi and am eager to get the updated software in my car.
I sympathize with Musk critics. His politics are appalling to me. But my car is safer than any car, anywhere, that doesn't have FSD.
