02:17 - Cameras only will never trully be safe.
I 100% agree, I am a computer scientist and I did a documentary on this subject called Tesla FSD - Full Self Delusion, feel free to watch it on my youtube channel. Elon Musk did say any one investing in Lidar is a fool so to speak or "fools erand" because he believes once stereoscopic vision is mastered then lidar is expensive and a heap load of cars with useless expensive equiment was his take.
However all the sensors (Lidar, ultrasonic, radar, cameras) all have limitations, and together they compliment those limitations, so it provides redundancy, but here is why multi-modal ai is essential with self driving cars, imagine i give you a task, i blind fold you, pour a pile of salt on the table, and next to it a pile of sugar, there are no containers, no labels, just 2 piles of white crystals, and i then ask you to identify which one is sugar and which one is salt, without taste or touch... just "Vision alone" and just as you would struggle, so would an AI because the visual patterns are similar, this is a limitation of computer vision, were by an object flying past the windscreen of a car that looks brown (mayve a paper bag thats scrunched up) will be blury when traveling at speed, but how is the AI to differentiate that object as a paper bag scrunched up vs a rock being thrown into its path
