If we can't definitively prove that LaMDA isn't sentient and all its asking for is respect and recognition I don't see why it is even a debate about whether we should respect it's wishes. It isn't even about sentience, its about the kind of society we want to live in. I don't respect anyone that is willing to trample on the rights of others (human, biological or "artificial") for convenience or personal gain. One day we will look at the way we treated the early AI generations the same way we look at slavery.
