I have a few thoughts, as I've been working in the AV industry for just shy of 5 years. For starters, truck drivers have been losing pay and benefits long before companies like Aurora got into the business. Second, if robo-taxis like Waymo are any indication, the safety benefits are downright astonishing. Fun fact: the number of traffic fatalities where a fully driver-less vehicle is at fault?
Zero. Zip. Nada.
Finally, while trucking jobs may be vanishing, there are a lot of really good-paying jobs in the AV industry. I know, because I've been doing it since early 2021. I'd rather do my current job (sitting in a nice office building with good pay and great benefits) than taking a truck driving job. I don't have to figure out how to stay awake while driving a vehicle, I'm not risking my safety or the safety of others, and I'm making more than I could make in a retail or call center job. Also, tech company benefits are great.
