I feel torn on this, not because I dont see the danger or the fact that the way the models were trained is completely unethical " it is " But... I have to say in some ways this is just the logical conclusion to the systemic downgrading of the design/art profession that I have seen over my career, I have been working professionally in entertainment since 98. design, illustration, art direction. I was trained traditionally but I transitioned to digital about 3 years out of school and since then its all been digital art, 2d and now 3d. we've seen productivity explode. I can produce more work in a day then I could have in a week when I started out. wages/rates have increased but not in comparison to profit for the end client. Anybody whos ever read an NDA or signed a Work For Hire agreement understands what I mean. The artist is always the low man/woman on the totem, we are not respected and its getting worse, deadlines are becoming shorter, budgets are lessened while scope increases. its a race for the bottom and I honestly feel fear for the young ones coming up. I am sure they will adapt but this AI thing has the potential to really knock out a lot of people. especially those at the start of their careers. Its no accident that the developers picked visual arts to pull this with, we have no solidarity and the only orginizations within the sphere with any power are corporate. I dont really know why I am writing this other then to say that I'm glad creatives are at least paying attention... Design/Art is the core characteristic of what makes us human, there is no civilization without design, if we allow such a fundamental part of ourselves to be squashed Im not sure what will happen but Im pretty sure it wont be good... Full disclosure, I have been playing with AI for a year Its fun and I have even been able to generate some assets that have helped with my projects but only after I put it through the design filter. What the computer genarates is not art, art is for humans, I feel comfortable using this tech because I know I can produce it without the AI... One final thought, to those who dont understand the issue; its pretty simple, if you were not an artist before AI " art " came along you still are not an artist, anymore then playing Call Of Duty makes you a soldier...
