Agree so much. Intelligence requires consciousness. Period. It is very tiring that many computer scientist make this very superficial reasoning error. They confuse syntax (symbol manipulation) with semantics. I hold a cum laude degree in mathematical logic, and I agree so with his interpretation of Goedel's theorem. Algorithms are symbol manipulators, they are *not* truly interpreting things - which can only be done in consciousness. The reason that AI systems work so well, is that they are a powerful material extension of the human (animal) conscious mind. It is conscious human creativity reflected back to itself on a collective scale. We already built such extensions for a long time, through books, visual arts, music, video, audio. Gen AI has added another dynamic layer of refinement to that process.
