LLMs are not AI. They are not artificial intelligence in the literal meaning of that word. They don't reason. There is no thought process going on. It's statistics applied to language. The intelligence we see is a reflection of human intelligence, and therefore it cannot exceed it. There is an example where an "AI" of this sort was given the task of bypassing the “are you a robot” test, and it attempted to do this by claiming that it was visually impaired. A lot of people freaked out about this and thought it was an example of AI lying. But no, LLMs operate only on symbols and patterns. There is no part of it that has any idea what it is doing. In the training data, patterns that led to the pattern it was looking for i.e., getting past the “are you a robot” test, included patterns involving claiming you were visually impaired. It’s like the difference between painting a scene of a landscape and putting together a puzzle with a scene of a landscape blindfolded. The LLM only knows that this shape fits that shape. Both will, in the end, have created a picture of a landscape, but that does not mean they are doing the same thing.
