He was reacting to a demonstration of very primitive procedural/algorithmic animation, not modern generative AI. It was literally about generating zombie movements using simple algorithms.
It's kind of ironic how this eight-year-old clip has become the "definitive argument" against current AI. Technology has evolved tremendously since then. It's like using a reaction to the first cell phone in the 1980s to criticize modern smartphones.
Miyazaki was right to criticize that particular demonstration, it was kind of soulless, just procedural movement with no artistic purpose. But applying that reaction to today's generative AI, which can create images with much more nuance and human direction, is kind of intellectually dishonest.
