Now I don't know enough about the other cultures to say anything about them but in India we had these gurukul systems since ancient times where young children were sent to spend their younger years and study many things (warcraft, commerce, art, science and math, philosophy, weapons welding/mostly fencing, morality, spirituality, ....well those are all I remember for now so let's just end the list there)
They had to live with their gurus away from their family, away from their luxury and status in society. Everyone was to be treated equally be it some royalty or someone from the lower class. They had to forage for food everyday by themselves. So it was pretty much a self sustaining part of society unlike the schools from today. Now I know it's difficult to establish such a system in modern times but it'd be cool if we could pull it off.
