I am a writer and have strong feelings against AI art/writing. I bought into the myth of inborn talent almost all my life. Since I could talk, I was telling stories, and it didn't take long for me to start writing them down. When I was young and typing away, I would see how terrible my work was and go, "It's okay. Someday I will be good at this." I vividly remember the day I sat down to write and realized my prose had actually become quite good.
But I still believed the myth, that I had only developed good prose because I was born talented. In fact, I only realized the myth a few months ago.
Why do we believe it? Why do I struggle to not believe it sometimes? I'm here looking at your old art and thinking, "Girl, that's talent, I could never do something like that." Why?
My theory is it has to do with passion. Everyone is born with giftings of various things and levels. Our passions for those gifts also vary. I grew up passionate about writing, so it's no wonder I worked so hard at it and no wonder I finally developed the prose I wanted. (Now to learn about story structure... 😅)
So if you're passionate about sewing and see people making gorgeous Regency-era costumes and you're thinning, "Wow, I'd love to do that, but there's no way I have the talent." Talent just means you pick up something faster than most people. You don't need talent, though it is nice. You need--and want--skill. Let yourself start small and go through that season of, "I'm not so good at this but I can get better." Your reward will be very great.
