Facial recognition is only reliable with white male faces. It doesn’t work on black faces or female faces. This is a known fact, and this isn’t the ONLY problem where AI/ML fucks up the justice system, because there is sentencing software that has racial bias built into the system because the justice system was biased and there’s no way to train it on the samples that aren’t going to put racial bias into the system.
One of the reasons that facial recognition fails on dark skin is because of technical limitations in digital imaging. Simply put, the dynamic range of digital images cannot capture enough detail on dark colored faces. Just try to increase the brightness or contrast on any dark image, and you’ll see how distorted and grainy those dark images are, and I don’t see that limitation being overcome anytime soon.
That’s why iPhones that have FaceID use Infrared light to scan your face. It shows more depth and won’t be thrown off by bad lighting conditions or reflectivity issues.
