Hmmm then why not just do say a low and mid compression level images of jpeg. Say you did high resolution but 50%, thus it would automatically include artifacts but wouldn't be noticeable? Default compression of JPEG is about 80% which is noticeable and pretty terrible, but only if looked at anything closer than an arm's distance away.
You could also add say 20% noise. Though how the image generation is a method of de-noising so i'm not sure how well that works.
