My take is that 'autonomy' is an *active* system rather than a passive one. My vacuum isn't autonomous, and automation or an automata, it's an entirely 'passive' cleaning system that requires my or someone else's input to be useful, but a roomba *is.* A roomba will automatically clean without anyone's further input so it doesn't matter if people do nothing, it still works. In the same way a trap or a mine isn't automated because it requires people to be doing something to work, the mine or trap is a passive system. This does mean, however, that you probably *could* define something like war dogs or war elephants as autonomous weapons systems, though I would argue that there is an implication that an automation must be of human creation to qualify fully, those animals certainly sit in the same 'class' of weapon
