Tbh the people who aren't understanding why artists are upset are seriously lacking in empathy. What these AI models are doing is theft pure and simple. It's direct copying of an artists work. It's basically a type of forgery. I'm not an artist and I've used AI before to generate artwork based on reference images but the references I use are always artwork that are in the public domain. Thats always been an option: use public domain artwork to train these models and to generate pieces. There's millions of high quality public domain pieces already available so there's no reason to use someone's copyrighted work without their permission. Also, these AI companies could just ask permission to use people's work, it's not hard.
