Neil, that is one fundamental thing you get wrong about AI, most people get it wrong. Its not just digesting existing stuff. It can innovate and evolve, given the right goal and conditions. that is a fact. scientific. Look up Reinforced Learning, Genetic Algorithms and Multi-Agent Systems. For example, GA's broad exploration is used to find promising new areas and the RL's focused learning is used to perfect the solutions within those areas, so the combination of those two approaches can make real and effective innovation. There are real world examples of this being accomplished, multiple times. Look it up.
