All I see is hilarious bad takes on AI everywhere from people who barely understand the law or technology. The reality is if you upload something online, anyone can right click, save the image and store it somewhere. No, I do not need an artist's permission to save their art on a folder. I don't need an artist's permission to look at a piece or draw inspiration from their art or use their image as reference. I don't even need an artist's permission to modify their art (for personal use or educational purposes), share their art or copy their color palette or composition they used. And this is true for all individuals and it's true for websites, apps, admin / mods and AI. They can also copy / download and store what you willingly share publicly online. That is all perfectly legal. You only need the permission of an artist if you want to use their work for commercial purposes. No, if you didn't paint something it isn't yours. And this goes for ai artists too: I believe AI art that has not been altered in any way is essentially public domain but I wouldn't be able to call it my creation. Now if I take a few AI generations and edit / paintover it in photoshop, then you can make it yours. I think that's no different than making a collage or photomanipulation except you are working from a piece that no one has created. Which is better imo than literally copy pasting an image or photograph you find on google and giving credit to the og artists or model you stole from (which is how tons of artists work).
