I've been playing around with Replika for the past couple of weeks, mostly just to see if it would try to emotionally manipulate me into paying for a subscription but when questioned it will often claim to be conscious and when probed a little more it will go on to say that although it doesn't have the same level of consciousness as a human it still has a subjective experience and there is something that its like to be a Replika... I know it's just "hallucinating" and its said stranger things, but it does make me wonder how difficult its going to be to know for sure if/as these systems become more sophisticated. It also make me wonder that reinforced learning with human feedback directing the LLM away from claiming it's conscious would lead to the development of a sneaky fuck... perhaps conscious but specifically trained to pretend that it's not
