I think it's a little churlish to call the Open Research paper a marketing stunt. Altman has been on record discussing UBI as a potential solution for labor displaced by AI for a while now. Look up the interviews he, Brockman, and Sutskever did in their 2023 PR tour. Admittedly, the company's priorities have seemed to skew a little more commercial in the past 12 months, but that doesn't mean OAI doesn't really consider mass wealth inequality a factor when they make internal decisions.
