For the people who don't understand why digital artists are so frustrated there is another analogy. In case of diffusion models artists are at the same position as junior programmers tasked with writing the original code for a big software company. They may have that code in advance but since that code wasn't made for everyone's commercial use the software company still must pay for that pieces of code. I believe there whould be much less backlash if every artist whose works was used to train the data whoud get a share in the profits of software company or whoud be payed right away. And the ethical AI service whould look like a company with shares owned by artists, shares given to them in exchange for permission of training the model over their works. The other important thing you've mentionned is the forgery thing. And there is a question: does people. who send you e-mails describing their models trained over your worksalso give you a free copy of their complete models so you yourself can use it to make sketches (as this is the legitimate use of AI)?
